Family Hanami

Since we moved from the U.S. to Japan this past summer we have thoroughly enjoyed living in Japan. My 2 sons particularly love their freedom and independence because in the U.S. they always had to depend on mom or dad to drive them everywhere and my wife and I also like not having to drive them! Our U.S. friends are shocked that we don’t even have a car in Japan and of course we feel good about being so “green”.
We are particularly enjoying the very distinct change of seasons in Japan and all the accompanying traditions from Bon Matsuri to Oshogatsu to Hanami!

2 weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon we left our dogs behind and went to Inokashira Koen for a family hanami, buying some of our favorite food on the way gyoza, chahan, dango, akinotane and beer. We didn’t bring our own plastic sheet to lay on the ground so instead I politely asked some college kids if we could “rent” part of their sheet in exchange for a few beers! They were very generous, and drunk, and we had a great time sharing conversation, food and drinks. We had a lot more fun than if we brought our own plastic sheet!

Here is a picture of us: Cristian (13), Preston (17), me and my wife, Antonia.
