"Be a good animal, true to your animal instincts."

Dear Fitness Professional,

I love the New Years season in Japan. The predictable rituals surrounding the ending of the year, including the bonenkai, the "yoi otoshi o", the office "osoji", the toshikoshi soba, "kohaku utagassen", the "ekiden", the hatsumode and the "akemashite omedetou gozaimasu!"

I also really like the Japanese animal calendar where each year is symbolized by a different animal. This being the year of the Ox I thought it appropriate to share with you one of my favorite quotes from D.H. Lawrence, the British author who lived from 1885 to 1930, who wrote,

"Be a good animal, true to your animal instincts." -
D.H. Lawrence

While I can't say exactly what D.H. Lawrence meant certainly one of the fundamental meanings I take from that quote is this: that to be a good human you have to take care of your own physical condition. Our bodies are an incredible support and nourishment system for our brains and unless we are "being good animals" and caring for our physical condition then we are short-changing and undermining our selves, our quality of life and ultimately our potential.

As fitness professionals you are to be congratulated for helping yourselves as well as your members "be good animals" in maintaining an active lifestyle and helping thousands of your members "be good animals" as well.

In addition to the importance of living an active physical life, here are a few other thoughts, in this year of the Ox, on "how to be a good animal" in 2009:

-Be enthusiastic in every task you approach. (My dog always amazes me with his consistent enthusiasm, even for the very smallest pleasures and events.)

-Be highly aware. Our awareness determines our actions and our actions determine our success.

-Be present in whatever you are doing and with whomever you are with.

-Be alert and engage all your senses. Pay attention to what you see, hear, smell and touch.

-Be a bit cautious and on guard at all times.

-Enjoy each moment, even the most mundane.

-Be curious in other people and things around you.

-Be ready to take action at any time.

-Be alert and engage all your senses.

-Be connected to people all around you.

-Be expressive to others about how you feel.

Thank you again for your support of Bravo!
Be a good animal, and have a great year!
